OBJECTIVES AND METHODOLOGY
Our methodology is based a holistic approach to language learning focusing on communicative learning, as we focus on the students’ listening, oral comprehension, reading and writing skills. All our classrooms are equipped with interactive projectors, which allow our teachers to make the classes more engaging, dynamic and collaborative.
In Uptown English we expect our students to study higher levels than they do in their high school.
Our main objective is that before they start university, students pass the FCE (First Certificate in English), so later they can focus on higher levels.
Every course has a book, which we use to study level appropriate grammatical structures and vocabulary as well as incorporating other resources such as games, audio and video materials based on the students’ needs.
Our groups are small, as the minimum students per class are 4 and the maximum 12, which means that the teacher can offer a much more individual monitoring, and the students can improve their speaking skills more quickly.
The students spend time working individually but also in pairs or small groups, working together to improve communication skills, always while observed and helped by the teacher.
Apart from the 3 hours that students are in the school, we provide continuous evaluation as the students will have homework so they can review and reinforce the language they have learnt in class and they will have the chance to go through their work with their teacher. Regularly, short tests and exams will be done to observe how the students are progressing in their group.
Throughout the course, families will have the opportunity to have two meetings with the teacher to talk about their child’s progress.
